As educators, we are deeply aware of the significant impact of technology and the post-COVID environment on student learning and well-being. We recognize the challenges posed by the rapid advancement of technology on student development, including social median and AI. We have also observed a notable increase in anxiety levels and development delays in some students, likely influenced by the pandemic and increased technology use. Many students are also experiencing difficulties with executive functioning skills, such as planning, focus, and self-regulation.
During our recent trip to St Louis for the ISACS conference several of the presentations highlighted these issues, prompting us to consider the implications of technology integration and the need for a balance approach. Many educators we spoke with at the conference expressed concern about students exhibiting significant developmental delays, approximately two years behind in various social and academic areas. Additionally, there seems to be a notable increase in anxiety levels among students.
To address these challenges and best support our students, we have dedicated significant time during our Friday professional development sessions to discuss and develop solutions. We have collaborated with additional educators, to create effective strategies. To better meet the diverse learning needs of our students, we have implemented a new instructional approach for grades 1-5.
The students will now be divided into three class, as opposed to two, with each group being led by a dedicated teacher for morning meetings, language arts, and math instruction. These groupings are designed to provide differentiated instruction based on individual student needs; academic , social-emotional, and learning styles. The new groupings will follow the same overarching curriculum for "Exploring Nature's Canvas" while continuing to participate in whole-group activities, field trips, and other shared experiences.
We believe the changes we are implementing will create a more supportive and engaging learning environment for all students. One of the guiding principles of Clear Spring School is meeting the students where they are at. We are committed to continually evaluating and refining our approach to ensure the best possible outcomes for each child.
